  1. Don't force it down or keep trying the remote. Leave the door as it is.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Give the remote a rest: each new try strains the opener and can bend the door.
  2. Stay out from under the door. If you can see something in its path, like a bin or packed snow, say so when you call.
  3. Never tape over, bypass or move the little sensors near the floor to force it shut.

Spring snapped

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the door and the opener alone: no lifting it by hand, no pressing the button.

Request a visit What the fix involves

A torsion spring letting go sounds like something fell in the garage, and then the door refuses to lift. If that happened in Essa today, we bring the matching spring, replace it as a pair when the door has two, check the cables and bearings beside it, and rebalance the door before we leave. Calls from Colwell, Egbert, Ivy, Thornton and Utopia are covered too.

The fix, explained · Essa

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementOne side of the door sits higher than the other in the tracks, and a lift cable is hanging slack or has jumped off its drum.

The fix

Torsion spring replacement restores the counterweight that makes a garage door light enough to lift. A sectional door often weighs more than a fridge, and the spring above the opening carries nearly all of that load, storing energy as the door closes and releasing it as it opens.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThe morning after a thaw the opener groaned, the door stayed stuck to the icy floor for a second, then lurched up crooked.

The fix

An off-track reset is the visit that puts a crooked, jammed or hanging garage door back onto its rails. Sectional doors ride on rollers inside a pair of curved steel tracks, and when a roller escapes, the door racks sideways and jams.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementYour older door has springs along the tracks, and one cable has slipped off its pulley and dangles slack.

The fix

Two steel cables do the lifting on a sectional garage door. Each runs from a bracket at a bottom corner up to the counterbalance, and the springs pull on the door through them.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementOne of the springs beside the track is hanging loose at the front end, its pulley dangling, and a length of cable lies slack along the top of the…

The fix

Every extension spring should carry a containment cable, and replacement is the moment to make sure yours do. A containment cable runs through the centre of the spring and is anchored at both ends, to the rear hanger and to the bracket at the front of the track.

Until then

Book soonEmergency Release RepairThe power went out in the middle of an ice storm, the car is inside, and when you reach up for the red handle there is nothing there.

The fix

There are two releases on many garages, and this service covers both. Inside, the red handle drops from the trolley and anyone standing in the garage can pull it.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairIt is a January morning and the door lifts about a hand's width, groans, and settles back down.

The fix

Most openers built in the last fifteen years report their own trouble. When something is wrong the head unit blinks its lights in a count, an up arrow and a down arrow flashing in a pattern, or a status light repeating a number.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door

36%

Homes of every age. About 36% of homes in Essa were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Mixed neighbourhoods often include renovated older houses with a new facade and a garage door that no longer suits it. Choosing a door that ties the renovation together, then installing it plumb and balanced in an older opening, is work we do regularly and enjoy.

77%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 77% of homes in Essa (2021 Census).

Households in detached homes often have several remotes, a keypad and a phone app between family members and their cars. We keep all of them programmed to the opener, replace the ones that have failed, and explain how to add a new one when a car changes hands.

Have a technician assess your door in Essa.

Our technicians treat a door in Essa as a system: springs, cables, drums, rollers, tracks, opener and sensors all affecting each other. A repair that ignores the neighbouring parts fails early, so we check the lot, fix what is worn, and tell you honestly what is fine and can wait.

Baxter, Avening, Brentwood and New Lowell

  • Nothing hidden. Every part we replace, you can see. Every adjustment, we explain. If we find something unexpected, we stop and tell you before continuing.

  • Care with heavy parts. Springs and cables are handled with the right tools and a steady method, and the door is secured before any tension is released.

  • Clear about what comes next. Before we leave, you know what was done, what to watch for, and when the door might want attention again.

Advice · (249) 501-0047

Why does my door struggle in cold weather?

Cold affects several things at once. Old lubricant thickens into a drag on every hinge and bearing. Steel contracts slightly, so a track that was snug becomes tight. Rubber seals stiffen and the bottom seal can freeze to the slab. The opener then reads all this extra resistance as an obstruction and stops or reverses. A fall tune-up with a low-temperature lubricant, silicone on the seals and correctly set force goes a long way toward smooth winter mornings.

What happens during the visit, and do I need to move the car?

The technician needs clear access to both tracks from floor to ceiling, so moving vehicles out and shifting anything stored against the walls near the tracks helps. The visit itself runs in order: the door is watched in motion, every roller and its hardware is inspected, the door's balance is tested, the door is secured and the rollers are changed one position at a time, the track is cleaned and squared, moving parts are lubricated, and the door and opener are tested.

What stops the door from falling if a cable lets go?

It depends, and not reliably. The other cable and its spring may hold that corner so the door tips and wedges in the track rather than falling square, and the rollers binding can add some resistance, but neither is dependable: the door can still drop unexpectedly on the failed side. Some doors also carry a broken-cable device on the bottom bracket that grips the track if a cable fails. Because the door may not be held at all, the technician clamps and supports it before doing anything else.

How can I tell if my springs are wearing out before they break?

Watch for a door that feels heavier by hand when the opener is released, an opener that strains or slows, a door that drops the last stretch rather than settling, or one that drifts down when stopped halfway. Visually, look for stretched gaps between coils, rust streaks or pitting on the steel, and any sag in the shaft. A balance check when you notice these lets you plan a replacement rather than react to one.
